The new president of the University of Michigan cited Thomas Jefferson's lobbying to have the Virginia General Assembly divert money from secondary schools to pay for the University of Virginia,
according to this report of her installation. In the Garry Wills
book on Mr. Jefferson's University, he writes that Jefferson also lobbied at other times in favor of diverting money away from a proposed expansion of the College of William & Mary to secondary schools.
